Okay, so picture this:

  • A refrigerator with a built-in barcode scanner
  • A handheld barcode scanner for items that go in the cupboard
  • A laptop that manages all the food inventory in your house

Get it? When you go to the grocery store and stock the fridge and cabinets, you just scan everything before you put it up. A bit of a pain in the butt…but then you’ve got this great little software on your kitchen laptop produces shopping lists for you. Or it gives you a little “ding-ding” when you’re down to one carton of milk. Or matches up to your recipe file so that you can look through your recipes and ONLY see the ones that require the ingredients you have on-hand.

In fact, it wouldn’t be a big leap from there to a situation where you can just do all your grocery shopping online. You sit down at your little kitchen laptop, pull up a list of things that the software says you need….and then do a 1-Click Buy and all the non-perishables on your list are automatically ordered and shipped to you.

Holy smoke! We’re in the Jetsons, now! Yeah!

Then again, I’m not holding my breath. Technology is a wonderful thing…but I’ll bet you I can get the same thing done with less effort by just hiring a personal chef.

P.S. Technology doesn’t always do what you want, too. Have you noticed that everytime there’s a Space Shuttle launch, it gets delayed because of a “fuel leak”. Hmmm….A fuel leak? Really? I don’t know about you but I drive an SUV….and to my knowledge it’s never had a “fuel leak”. And it costs about a gajillion dollars less than a Space Shuttle. Food for thought.
